Let’s Talk About Vitiligo

It used to be that the only models who graced the catwalks during fashion week were white, blonde, and had the perfect complexion. However, fashion designers like Marc Jacobs, have made the catwalk— and the model norm— look a bit differently. Now, models of all races, weights, and ethnicities grace fashion week— including models with vitiligo.
Vitiligo is a skin condition that causes progressive depigmentation across the skin and creates white patches. Although you can get vitiligo on any part of the body, it is most commonly found on the face, elbows, hands, knees, genitals, feet, and upper thighs. Some patients also get it on their scalp or eyelids. Although there is no cure yet for vitiligo, there are some treatment options from Callendar Cosmetic and Dermatology Center that may be worth considering.
Treatment Options
Because Vitiligo is a very difficult skin treatment to treat, we see many vitiligo patients cope with it by doing things like wearing sunscreen on their light skin patches to prevent sunburns and using makeup as a form of camouflage. Even though some patients choose to live with their vitiligo, there are other patients who choose to consider some of the treatment options that we offer here at Callender Cosmetic and Dermatology Center including:
- Phototherapy (medical exposure to ultraviolet light)
- Topical drugs (to increase skin sensitivity to light)
- Topical corticosteroids
- Topical immunosuppressants
- Autologous skin grafts from pigmented areas
- Medical tattooing (micropigmentation)
