Is Your Birthmark Dangerous?

Moles & Birthmarks | CallenderHaving a birthmark may have been something that you boasted about to all of your friends when you were in elementary school but as an adult, it may be something that you try to conceal. Depending on the size and location of your birthmark, it may be something that you’re more embarrassed of than anything. One thing to know about birthmarks is that even though the majority of them are harmless, there’ still a chance that they may develop into cancer at one point. So, what can you do to keep a closer eye on it?

Signs to Look For

When it comes to skin cancer, moles are usually more of a threat than birthmarks. However, because birthmarks either have more pigmentation or not enough pigmentation, it can make them more prone to getting sunburned which may increase the likelihood that they will turn into cancer. Birthmarks that exhibit any of the following signs should be checked by our office immediately:

  • Larger than six millimeters.
  • Itches or bleeds.
  • Rapidly changes in color, size or shape.
  • Has multiple colors.
  • Is located where it can’t be easily monitored, such as on the scalp
